Africa’s tallest mountain range, the continent’s largest lake, the world’s longest river, the biggest living primates, and of course, the iconic Big Five – Uganda is home to colossal natural wonders. This 13-day expedition sees you hiking in misty forests to spot wild gorillas and the lesser-known sights of tree-climbing lions, exploring verdant waterways teeming with pods of hippo, and discovering a world apart as you encounter the region’s colourful cultures.
We depart from our hotel near Entebbe at 08h00 and travel west through the outskirts of the capital, Kampala. We will stop to visit a drum market and the equator en-route. We will reach Lake Mburo National Park in the afternoon where there are large herds of game and hippos. Our camp will be on the shores of the lake.

We begin our day with a game drive/walk, after which we will leave the Park to journey through a landscape of undulating hills peppered with banana plantations and herds of magnificent long-horned Ankole cattle. In the afternoon we journey on rough mountain terrain and pass isolated villages, frequently hidden by mist, toward the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This evening’s camp is situated at the forest’s edge.

On one of these days, we will participate in what is the by far the most memorable ‘wow factor’ of this tour – Gorilla Trekking. We divide into small groups and hike up into the lush forest, led by local guides, to track and spend some time with a whole family of scarce wild Mountain Gorillas. Because the Gorilla permits are limited, we will spend two days here in order to give everyone a chance to take part. If permits are on offer on day 4, we will pay a visit to Lake Bunyonyi on day 3. When not hiking to see the gorillas, we embark on leisurely village walks and spend some time seeking out the incredible birds that have made the forest fringe their home.

Departing from the mountains and lush forestry, we head down to the grasslands of the magnificent Queen Elizabeth National Park. We spend two evenings camping here in an isolated campsite. Besides the plentiful species of mammals, reptiles and birds, Ishasha is famous for its massive tree-climbing lions. We will embark on lengthy game drives in order to seek out the high fig trees where we might spot these lions, as well as the vast savannah for other animals.

We pack up our gear in the morning and journey across the park and through the Maramagambo Forest, where we make our way to Rwenzori or the ‘Mountains of the Moon’. Our camp will be set up in the local community centre where we can mingle with the locals and go for a walk around the villages, then into the forest. The slopes rise up to 5,000 metres above sea level and are often capped in snow making for an unusual sight considering it is so close to the equator.

Today’s drive will be one where you’ll want to focus on the spectacular scenery that passes you by as you while away your time on the overland truck. We will pass through lush tea plantations and take the day slowly on the long and bumpy drive. Given the drive time today, we will stay over in a local hotel in Masindi.

Look forward to a fun day today as we get to meet a troupe of chimpanzees who are habituated and amusing to meet and watch. We will spend about an hour with the group before heading back to camp situated within the park. Our next activity today is to explore Murchison Falls where the Nile River narrows and falls into the Rift Valley. You can look forward to wide open spaces, rolling hills and beautiful scenery where you can maybe spot the Rothschild Giraffe. We will be camping for two nights here.

Yes! Rwanda pairs perfectly with Uganda (for gorillas & safari), Tanzania, or Kenya for a broader East African adventure.
Treks range from 1–6 hours over steep, muddy terrain. A moderate fitness level is recommended, but the life-changing encounter is worth every step!
Absolutely, when traveling with a reputable tour operator and taking sensible precautions, overlanding in Africa is generally safe. It’s an adventurous journey, but that doesn’t mean it’s reckless. With experienced crews, well-maintained vehicles, and thoughtful route planning, safety is a top priority.
Here’s how operators ensure a safe and secure experience and what travelers should be aware of:
How our Professional Operators Keep You Safe
Expert Crews
Reputable tours are led by seasoned guides and drivers who know the routes, conditions, and local cultures inside out. They’re trained in first aid, crisis response, and vehicle maintenance, and their regional knowledge is invaluable when navigating remote areas.
Reliable, Purpose-Built Vehicles
Overland trucks and 4x4s are specifically designed for Africa’s rugged terrain. Operators conduct regular maintenance, carry spare parts, and often have support networks along the route, reducing the risk of serious breakdowns in remote regions.
Smart Route Planning
Tours are carefully routed with safety in mind. Operators monitor travel advisories, local conditions, and political developments daily and work closely with campsite managers and local contacts. If a region becomes unstable, they adjust the itinerary.
Hassle-Free Border Crossings
African border crossings can be confusing, but crew-led crossings make things smoother. The team handles paperwork and understands local processes, minimizing delays and avoiding potential complications.
Campsite Security
Most tour campsites are secure, fenced, and often patrolled. Vehicles may include onboard safes for passports, money, and valuables. When wild camping, guides follow strict safety protocols. Common Concerns & How They’re Managed
Petty Theft in Cities
Like in any travel destination, theft can occur, especially in busy urban areas. How it’s handled: You’ll receive advice on staying vigilant, using money belts, avoiding nighttime walks alone, and keeping valuables secure. Tours often limit city stays or arrange secure transport.
Challenging Road Conditions
African roads can range from smooth highways to rough dirt tracks. Wildlife is also a hazard, particularly after dark. How it’s handled: Drivers are trained to handle a wide range of terrain. Most tours avoid night driving altogether to reduce risks.
Health & Illness
Travelers may experience mild illnesses or encounter tropical diseases. How it’s handled: Operators advise on vaccinations and malaria prevention before the trip. Tour leaders are trained in first aid, carry medical kits, and provide guidance on food, water, and hygiene. Travel insurance is mandatory.
Wildlife Encounters
Camping in or near wildlife areas adds to the adventure, but comes with responsibility.
How it’s handled: Guides are trained in wildlife behavior and safety. Campsites are carefully selected, and clear instructions are given about staying within safe zones and respecting animals’ space.
Political Instability
Though rare on tourist routes, unrest can happen.
How it’s handled: Operators continuously monitor regional stability and will reroute or cancel affected sections of a tour if necessary, prioritizing traveler safety at all times.
The Bottom Line
Overlanding in Africa is adventurous — but not unsafe. Traveling with the right operator ensures you’re in expert hands every step of the way, from remote bush camps to border posts.
